Information for Parents/Guardians Boyne Community School is very conscious of the stresses and strains of modern life for students (and their parents/guardians and endveavours to support them in as many ways as is practically possible, by offering a wide range of support services. The following are the main services available: · Resource/Learning SupportA Learning Support Team of experienced teachers give special support to those pupils who have difficulty in developing literacy and numeracy skills. The school works closely with a Department of Education psychologist who helps us design programmes for students with learning difficulties. Learning Support Co-ordinator – Ms. Carmel Elliffe. · Counselling: The school employs the services of two trained counsellors who attend the schoolfor a set number of hours each week. The service is open to any student who may be encountering difficult issues in their lives and it is completely confidential. Referrals can be made through the Principal, Deputy Principal or Year Head. · Home School Community Liaison: The school operates a home school liaison scheme which promotes the contact between home, school and the community. The Home School Liaison Co-ordinator is available to meet parents at any time in their home or in the school. Courses are also organised for parents and parental involvement in policy making is encouraged. The school is represented on the management committees of the SMART project and SMASMR. You need JavaScript enabled to view it · Mentoring: It is recognised that First Years may need extra help when settling into a new school environment. Specially chosen senior students are trained each year to act as mentors to First Year students. They meet the First Years on a regular basis particularilly in the first term and maintain contact throughout the year.· Parent to Parent Courses: During the Autumn term a special 5 week programme (delivered once weekly) will be offered to the parents/guardians of incoming First Years who are most earnestly requested to attend. The Parent to Parent programme is a video based workshop for parents of preteen and teens whose goal is to train the participants in the skills, attributes and abilities they may need to get their children through their adolescent years without significant drug or alcohol use. It has been used in numerous schools throughout the country and parents have found it of great benefit. · Book Rental: The school operates a limited book rental scheme. This allows parents who might have difficulty in purchasing school books the option of renting them for the duration of the school year for a set sum (approx. €75) . More details and form available from office, to be returned by early June.· Cool Schools Programme: This is an anti-bullying programme developed by the NEHB which is in operation in the school. Its purpose is to create an awareness of the nature of bullying and of its negative effects and to establish an environment where bullying is not tolerated.· Rainbows : Rainbows is a peer support group, facilitated by a team of specially trained staff, to support students who have experienced bereavement through loss or separation. The group meets on a weekly basis.· Parents Association: This is a voluntary organisation and all parents are invited to join. The AGM is held in October and the Association meets monthly. Its role is to facilitate discussion between parents and the school on a wide range of issues and to fundraise.· .Attendance Officer: The school employs an attendance officer who monitors the daily atttendance of students and who contacts parents if a student does not attend.· School Office: The office is open from 9am to 4.30pm. You need JavaScript enabled to view it · Evening Study: Supervised evening study is available for 3rd Year and 6th Year students on a paying basis.· School Psychologist: The School has the services of a Department of Education and Science psychologist who is assigned to the school for a number of days each year. She is available for testing and helping teachers draw up programmes for students.· Lunch Vouchers: A very limited number of free lunch vouchers are available for students who may have a particular need for same. Details from Attendance Officer.· Access Programme: Boyne Community School has been involved since 2001 with several access programmes with a number of 3rd level institutions including Blanchardstown, TCD, DIT, UCD, UL, Maynooth and UCC. Students who are eligible benefit from financial and educational support prior to (e.g. revision courses etc.) and during their time in college. They may also qualify for entry to certain courses at a lower points level. Full details available from Career Guidance Teacher, Mr. Dennis Ryan.· Students Council: The Students Council, offers a forum for students to raise issues relating to school matters, meets on a regular basis, represents all classes in the school and is engaged in fundraising.· 6th Class Transition Programme: The school organises a special ‘Transition Day’ for 6th class primary students from the South Meath area. Students attend a full day of classes, both practical and academic and experience at first hand the the different content and structures that make up the 2nd level school programme.· Parent/Teacher Meetings: Parent/Teacher meetings are held throughout the year for each year group. All parents are strongly urged to attend and to use the opportunity to discuss your son/daughter’s progress.· Canteen: The school canteen offers a choice of hot and cold meals and light refreshments during lunch hour at a reasonable cost.· English classes for Parents: Classes in English as a second language are amongst the various classes organised by the Adult Education Department. You need JavaScript enabled to view it · School Chaplain: The school has the services of a full-time school chaplain, Ms. Aoife Daly· SPHE: This programme builds on the primary school programme and places special emphasis in First Year on helping students cope with the transition from sixth class to first year.· Year Heads and Class Tutors: Each year has a Year Head and Assistant Year Head who deal with pastoral and discipline issues.
