Summerhill Community Centre. The centre was opened in late September 1980 and since then has provided a venue for much of the social life of the people living in the Summerhill area. The centre consists of a main sports hall – a great venue for indoor football, hurling and bingo. Attached to the hall is a kitchen and a lounge area with a fully stocked bar. There is also a large area for bowls and offices for the centre and the local community Employment Scheme. The centre complex also boasts a racquet ball / sports court. Summerhill Meals on Wheels Project has been in existence since November 1996 and today, an average of 50 meals are prepared and cooked every day. Monday – Friday 28 meals are delivered to people in their own homes by volunteer drivers and 20 people come into the Community Centre for their meal.
This project covers a wide area surrounding Summerhill village including Rathmolyon, Agher, Kiltale and Moynalvey. This project is self financing on a day to day basis thanks to the involvement of the FAS Community Employment Project, the Community Centre and H.S.E. funding.
The Meals on Wheels service is constantly looking at ways to reach out to the elderly and infirm in the community. Thanks to the Section 39 grant, continuous upgrading of equipment and facilities has been possible. Social gatherings and Christmas parties have also been made possible.
This year the Meals on Wheels will spend approx €10k carrying out necessary upgrading of equipment in the interest of health and safety thus providing a quality service for all who use it.
Since September 2007 the Meals on Wheels project has its own bus. On Fridays we collect people in the Moynalvey area and take them to the Community Centre for their meal and allow them to do any shopping they may require in the village before taking them home again afterwards. An average of twelve people currently use this service
This service was recently extended to the Rathmolyon area and on Wednesday the bus collects people in this area and takes them to the Community Centre for their meal.
As places are limited, if you would like to avail of a seat on the bus please contact Geraldine on 046 9557947 between 9.30am – 1.30pm to book your seat.
Currently approximately 12 residents of St. Josephs Hospital in Trim come to Summerhill Meals on Wheels one day per week and enjoy their dinner and the social outlet that this provides. We are aware that there are other residents who would like to avail of this service and we would be happy to offer one other day so that this would be made possible.
